The seven Choghadiya periods and their traditional uses
- Amrita
- Amrit means nectar. Traditionally preferred for worship, meaningful beginnings, and a wide range of auspicious activities.
- Shubha
- Shubh means auspicious. Traditionally chosen for ceremonies, learning, and beginning constructive work.
- Labha
- Labh means gain. Traditionally associated with trade, purchases, accounts, and business activity.
- Chara
- Char means moving. Traditionally suited to travel and movement; shown as neutral because suitability depends on the activity.
- Udveg
- Udveg means agitation. Traditionally avoided for auspicious beginnings; ordinary scheduled work can continue.
- Kala
- Kaal is traditionally unfavorable for auspicious beginnings. Prefer another window when the start time is flexible.
- Roga
- Rog is traditionally unfavorable for auspicious beginnings. Never postpone medical care or an urgent journey to wait for a period.
How to choose a time for your activity
First select your city and date. For a flexible everyday beginning, compare Amrit, Shubh, and Labh; for travel, consider Char too. Choose a practical window within the available time. For a wedding, housewarming, or another major ceremony, Choghadiya alone is not a complete muhurat.
Rahu Kaal is a separate daily interval used in traditional timing. Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela are daytime restrictions; Kaal Ratri applies at night. These can coincide with a favorable Choghadiya. If your tradition observes them, check them before selecting a ceremonial start time.
Calculation method for this city and date
Day duration = sunset − sunrise; divide by 8. Night duration = next sunrise − sunset; divide by 8 separately. The weekday determines the name sequence. The periods therefore vary with the season and are not fixed 90-minute slots.
For Barhi Village on Monday, October 19, 2026: sunrise 06:06 AM, sunset 05:39 PM, next sunrise Oct 20, 2026, 06:07 AM. Each day period lasts about 86.5 minutes and each night period about 93.5 minutes. Local time zone: Asia/Kolkata.
Why timings can differ between websites
This site calculates sun times locally with SunCalc from the selected coordinates, then uses tz-lookup for the time zone. It uses SunCalc’s default sunrise/sunset convention (the Sun’s upper edge at the horizon), with no observer-height adjustment. Different coordinates, sunrise conventions, elevation, and rounding can change the displayed times. Times are shown to the minute; no universal accuracy guarantee is implied.
After midnight and before sunrise
The table starts at sunrise on the selected local date and ends at the following sunrise. Times after midnight carry their calendar date. Before sunrise today, the current period belongs to the previous night, so it may differ from the periods in today’s table.
Choghadiya is a traditional timing preference, not a prediction or guarantee of results. Prioritize health, safety, preparation, and fixed commitments.
